Travel writing allows readers to experience places, cultures and adventures far beyond their own everyday world.

In Cherry-Garrard's account of his experiences in Antarctica we read about the extreme conditions faced by the explorers, who endured freezing temperatures, relentless winds and the constant challenge of survival in one of the harshest environments on Earth. As they read, students considered how Gingell used descriptive language to capture the sights, sounds and emotions of his adventure.

Throughout the unit, Year 8 have considered how writers not only describe places but also share personal experiences, perspectives and challenges that help readers develop a deeper understanding of different environments and ways of life.

More importantly, they have learned that reading about the journeys of others can broaden our horizons, spark curiosity and inspire adventures of our own.
