Deacon David Smith HMP Northumberland's Chaplain pays Sixth Form a visit

Faith

Deacon David Smith from St Aidan's RC Church paid a visit to chat to our Core RE sixth form students about life as a prison chaplain. Deacon David first stepped into a prison around 8 years ago and has not looked back since. He spoke passionately about how his faith and calling from God led him on his journey from working in an iron foundry to working with those who oftentimes are victims of their circumstances. David spoke to our Y12's and 13's about how he used his faith to be able to be that listening ear and offering pastoral support that some of these inmates desperately needed. From category A prisoners such as murderers to those those in category C in prison for the winter to avoid life on the streets, Deacon David has encountered them all. He answered some challenging questions posed from our Y13's including "How can someone of faith show so much compassion to those in prison who have committed such horrendous crimes?" discussing how he sees them for who they are not what they have done.
