RISE Up and Shine

At the start of the summer, two of our students set off from Newcastle for a four-week adventure in Cambodia after two years of fundraising. They joined 15 students from other schools at Heathrow before flying out via China.

The trip began with a moving lesson on Cambodia's 1970s history under the Khmer Rouge. Students then travelled to three remote villages to volunteer, where they built a well, put up fences, constructed school toilets, and taught English to local children.

Other incredible highlights included learning to scuba dive during five days on Koh Rong Sanloem island, visiting night markets, exploring a floating village, and watching a circus. They also took guided tours of Siem Reap’s famous temples, including Angkor Wat, and met the amazing "Hero rats" trained to detect landmines.

Both students had an amazing time and agree that this unforgettable experience has completely changed their outlook on life.
